Mirnaya Zatoka lies east of mainland Russia, within the maritime and administrative shadow of Sakhalin Oblast, officially classified as an uninhabited research island during the late Soviet era.

Shielded by harsh seas, unpredictable fog banks, and electromagnetic anomalies, it was deliberately kept off civilian shipping lanes and later scrubbed from most public maps.

Officially, the island never exceeded "regional significance."
